I need your advice as well, please

Hi:

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Cathy ("ok, everyone, I need the benefit of your 20-20 hindsight"), with a few exceptions. I have a pulling pain which is about a 6 or 7 about 80% of the time, and sharp pains which are sort of like electric shocks or spasms about 10% of my day (they rate a good 9, but only last for a few seconds at a time). Now this 80% + 10% are only during my waking hours, as when I'm laying down it only bothers me when I move. And sometimes I have 2 or 3 days where I feel almost painfree except for twinges and I think maybe it's all gone and I'm better...until the next round. I had a laparotomy and right oopherectomy in April 2000 - the pain began a couple of months after and seems to be progressively getting worse. I sometimes feel better after a b.m., but lately when I feel pretty bad I've noticed that my stool gets real skinny like.

The pain does interfere with my activities. For instance, today my husband wanted to take me shopping for my birthday and I had to stop a few times because of these stabbing pains and then I got crabby with myself and annoyed at the pain at my belly button and almost ruined the afternoon. Good thing I got over it quickly and we had a lovely dinner out!

When I saw my gyn in Aug. he said that the pain might be adhesions, and that they could go in and remove them but that I might end up worse. I have an appointment with him again this Wed., and I intend to discuss a pain specialist with him among other things. I have tried to deal with the fact that the pain is getting worse, and is now accompanied by the shock-like pains and pain with orgasm, but I fear that lately my coping skills just aren't so good. I find myself either grumpy or self pitying, and I don't like either of those people very much! So, finally, here are my questions for those who have already walked this path:

Would you advise just trying a pain specialist for now, and assume that the pain was from adhesions? (when I had the laparotomy the Dr. said he didn't see any endo.)

Would you advise having a laproscopic surgery just to see if it's really adhesions and not something else that an ultrasoud is missing?

Have any of you had any positive results with any non-narcotic drugs, and if so what were they? I had an addiction problem years ago and I'm petrified of becoming dependant on something.

Does anyone have any specific questions that you recommed I ask my gyn?

I'm in Toronto, Canada, so if anyone knows any good Dr's here I'd sure appreciate it. I'm sorry to be so long, and am so glad that there are people I can turn to for advice. Wishing you all pain free minutes, hours and days...
