Dear Stefanie, I don't know how anyone "manages" unbearable pain. I've tried everything over the years, and narcotics are the only thing that really works. However, having said that, the doctors who will be doing my surgery want me to get off narcotics, and I started to, and the pain became so intense I was once again bed ridden. I went off all medications at the insistance of my husband and mother a few years ago. My mind felt clear, but the clarity was used in trying to find original ways to kill myself to get rid of the pain. Accidents and things like that. I'm over that stage now. I really want to live and I went back to narcotics with my families' blessings. They would rather have me on them than dead or clutching the bed sheets trying not to scream. I do think some people are capable of being more zen like and using their minds and souls to remove themselves from the pain and maybe someday, I'll get there. I'm not afraid of being a " drug addict" because I don't think I want the medication, I just don't want the pain. Good luck to you and stay in touch and find another doctor. Love, Sally
