Dear Carolyn, Glad to hear that you are going to create awareness of ARD and the IAS in your area!!

Love, Helen

P.S. I have checked the accuracy of the websites.

Anyone can do what I did to create awareness about adhesion related disorder (ARD) and the International Adhesions Society. This was is such a simple way to let people know - and best of all, I didn't have to write the article!! All I did was:

1.) I PHONED THE NEWSPAPER...I said I would like to speak to the Lifestyle editor.

When the Lifestyle editor replied, I told her I had information that I would like to see featured in the Lifestyle section of the Echo Press (newspaper). I want people to become aware of the International Adhesions Society (IAS) - a support and education website for people who suffer from Adhesion Related Disorder (ARD). Then I very briefly told her about my experience as an adhesion sufferer.

I gave her the website address for the IAS <http://www.adhesions.org/index.htm> - and encouraged her take some time to see what the IAS has to offer victims of ARD.

2.) I PROVIDED INFORMATION.....I printed-out information from the IAS website - as well as some of the best websites about adhesions.

* Dear Doctor Letter

http://www.adhesions.org/images/DrReferLtr.pdf

* IAS Accomplishments http://www.adhesions.org/accomplishments.htm

* Abdominal Adhesions http://www.adlap.com/adhesions.htm

* Adhesion Related Disorder http://www.generalsurgeryinfo.com/gerhart5/index.html

The IAS newsletter: Connections http://www.adhesions.org/newsletter.htm I placed all of this information in a plastic binder - and took it to the newspaper office. I told the receptionist to give the binder of information to the Lifestyle editor. 3.) ACCEPTANCE.....In an e-mail to me the Lifestyle editor said: "I have researched some of the information and I think we could do a feature story on this medical topic. I will have a reporter call you sometime within the next two weeks to set up a time to meet with and interview you." By providing the above information right away, the reporter would have time to do some research on ARD and the IAS - before her interview with me.

3.) INTERVIEW DATE WAS SET.....The Echo Press reporter notified me by email: " Helen, I'll be working with you on the story idea you had on adhesions. I've had a little time to look over the information and I'm ready now to get together for an interview. Name a time and we'll get together."

4.) THE INTERVIEW.....When I met with the reporter for the interview, she had already prepared a rough draft for her feature story. As she began to interview me, I sensed she was trying to focus on my personal experience; so I simply reminded her that I wanted the focus to be on ARD and the IAS. I told her my 32 years of experience with ARD was too vast a topic to fit into the space allowed for a feature article in the Echo Press.

5.) TO CHECK ACCURACY.....A week later I met with Ms. Langman to be sure her information was accurate - before being printed. Jane did include some of my personal information - and what she included was okay with me. I was very impressed with the results of her research

6.) THE RESULT...On October 17, 2002 "Painful bonds" appeared in the Echo Press - and can be found at the following website:
