There are acouple things I do NOT agree with in your posts.

You said: I am disturbed by the number of posts on this site that deal with narcotic use. Some of the posts almost have an "exchanging recipes" feel to them. I prescribe narcotics regularly for patients with real pain, but am always worried about addiction. And someone with poor bowel motility surely doesn't need to be on chronic narcotics.

I think the number of reasons why we have this forum is for support. I know ALL too well how doctors can treat patients badly. Adhesions is a HORRIBLE pain that no one should have to deal with. And then for most of us, we have gone to the doctors only to be told that we are making this pain up, and that we need a shrink and not medical help. We come to this place to get opinions of what we have heard from doctors. So at least we are takin it into our own hands instead of SOLELY trusting these doctors that have time and time again not helped us, gave us poor dianoses and have made our pain be prolonged! For the longest time I was told to take motrin for my pain, while I laid in bed and cried and cried cause I could not even get up to go to the bathroom myself. Do you know how it feels to be 33 years old and to have to ask help to go to the bathroom? Or to tell your kids that no mommy can not go outside to play with you today cause I cant get out of bed? And the worst part about all of that is having a doctor tell you, that what I am experiencing...In your words, is not a REAL pain! One doctor that I have talked to that did understand that I had a REAL pain told me the equilvent of this pain to a man is supergluing your testicles to the inside of your leg and telling you to do jumping jacks, and to run around like that 24/7. And lets see if you have a REAL pain. Even though you would know something is wrong with your testicles, every CT scan you have, every blood test, xrays...you name it, every test comes back and says you are fine. Are you still going to try to convince them that you have a REAL pain? Damn straight you are.

I am just now starting to get help with getting some pain relief (after a year of constant chronice pain), but it still amazes me that there are people, let alone Doctors out there that does not think we have a REAL pain.

I'm sorry if this came off hostile, its just sooo frustrating to hear a doctor say that they will treat someone with a REAL pain, but not us We do have real pain. Trust me, I know, my family, my husband and two children, we ALL know. There are soo many doctors out there that are trying to tell us that we are making this thing up. Why in the world we would want to be bedridden??

And as far as getting addicted to narcotics, Helen has posted many wonderful sites about this. And you as a doctor SHOULD know them. There is a difference between addiction and dependence. If you are taking the narcotics and you dont have a valid pain, or if you do have a valid pain but abuse the narcotics, then yes they are addicted. But for all of us on this board it would be a dependence not an addiction. Without medication none of us would be able to function, myself i would have to use a bedpan to go to the bathroom cause I would not be able to walk to the bathroom by myself. At least the meds make me able to at least get out of the house with a wheelchair. Am I addicted to the meds? No I dont abuse them, I take them as they are to be taken. Am I dependant on them? Yes I am, I need them to be able to stand upright on my own without doubling over in pain.

Sorry if this issue has been resolved on this board, I have to have my husband read me the postings in here because I have been having a hard time lately. But I felt that I needed to respond to you
