Flax seed is brain food, too!

Flax seed oil is an excellent source of DHA, which is the long-chain fatty acid that is also found in fish like salmon. If you've ever heard the advice about eating fish being good for your brain, they are talking about DHA. It increases intelligence and relieves depression.

Since flax seed oil goes rancid quickly, the recommendation is that you buy the whole seeds and then grind just the amount you need right before you use it. You can buy a spice grinder, or one of those electric coffee bean grinders, or a morter and pestle. In order to get the oil (and the DHA) out, you have to grind up the seeds. So while the whole flax seeds are a great laxative, the ground-up flax seeds make a great laxative AND great brain food.

It sounds like an excellent practice would be some flax seed freshly ground up and added to breakfast each morning. I bet it would be yummy added to yogurt, or stirred into scrambled eggs, and of course sprinkled on the top of cereal...
