Dear Raijean:

I'm trying to wade through the posts that I've missed, so please forgive me if I'm replying and you've already received other responses.

I have never been pain free for any amount of time, although I've had times that the pain was tolerable for streches up to maybe two weeks. Since you say everything was good from October to April, and from your description of the pain and the rectal bleeding, I think you are very wise to see your GI. Blood in your stool should never be ingored unless you are sure it's from hemmorhoids(sp?). Perhaps you can get an ultrasound as well, to check to see if all is well with your ovaries (by a partial hyst I assume you still have your ovaries?) When you say a sharp, menstrual like pain it puts me in mind of ovarian type pain (although I'm no doctor!!)

For difficulty with b.m.s, I use a bulk agent (Metamucil), which some people have difficulty with and I would not recommend you use until you see the GI, as you've already had a bowel resection. Although it has helped me in the past, when you take a fibre agent such as Metamucil or flax, you need to start in very small amounts, and slowly work your way up to the recommended dosage. I saw another post from someone lately who said she'd tried flax and it really hurt. I think the pain is caused by the fibre expanding (or trying to) your intestines, so this is something that you have to approach with caution when you have adhesions.

Every person is so different, and things change. For instance, I used to take Metamucil every day, and eat at least one salad. Lately, if I do both, I have problems. Likewise, if I don't take the Meamucil for a few days I'm in trouble. So you see, this is something which is unique for each individual. My personal experience is that the fibre is necessary for me to be regular, and it lessens my pain.

I'm sorry to be so longwinded - I just wanted to respond and remind you that you are not alone. Please let us know how things go with the GI, and how you are feeling.

Best wishes, Clare
