One thing that you should be aware of is that depo is a progestin, which is a synthetic chemical which is similar to, but not identical to, the natural pregesterone that is produced in the human body. This has both advantages and disadvantages... The depo and other progestins can be taken orally, and they are not natural substances so they don't get broken down so quickly so the dose doesn't have to be repeated so often. The disadvantages are that some (not all) women have fairly unpleasant side-effects with progestins, because chemically they are more like testosterone than progesterone.

So I would seriously question the "last resort" comment because I would think that if the depo doesn't work then a trial of progesterone cream might be worth trying.

Also, I'm a little confused because I thought that it was the progestins not the estrogen that caused the blood pressure and blood clot problems that come from birth-control pills? I would think that a 3-month shot would be particularly dangerous. If you take micronil (the progestin-only "minipill") then you are only taking one day's worth at a time. If there are any problems then you can stop taking it and it will clear out of your system quickly, whereas if you have some problem with the depo you've just taken 3 whole months worth...

Sorry, that was more questions than answers!
