Jean, They preformed an abdominal nerve block. Where they insert a needle through the spine into the abdomen and numb the area with medication. When he tried to do the first nerve block it failed all the dye colored medication pooled in one big area. This is procedure is done under a special x-ray type machine with a television so they can watch the catheter needle. Unfortunately you have to be full awake for this procedure and its quite painful, but they have to know if they hit one the main nerve that effect your legs, as well as many many other nerves that are in your body, and the only way they know if they hit anything is by you telling them so. He tried moving the catheter line around this large pool and unfortunately did hit that main nerve, unbelievable amount of pain. Since the only way for him to go around this area would be to start the procedure over from square one and I was in condition to do so they rescheduled for another attempt, and he knew he needed to reinsert the needle in a different area and attempt again. This time the medication did work but it never was able to block the amount of area that they had hoped for because it still would only flow to certain areas and stop. The only thing that would cause this problem is adhesions, tumors and masses, and I had been cleared of those already...

Actually there is another way to check for adhesions, and this is through myofascial treatments. Which they use to try and manually break up adhesions. You can actually read about this treatment on the net there is alot of info on it now, its becoming a huge homeopathic treatment that is actually approved through many insurances. Therapist have to be specially trained in Myofascia to be able to do this procedure and even many who are not that great at it or cause major pain, something I have learned the hard way.. If you have large amounts of adhesions the chances of them breaking them up is pretty slim but majority of people only have a few bad areas, not like us but if surgery is no longer an option its something to look into. Its also a very longgggg treatment, and can take months to year to notice any true improvement but as the doctors say I have already been in pain for years what's the difference in waiting a few months to see if it brings any relief. Treatments are usually done 2-4 times a week, so if insurance doesn't cover its very expensive.. They also use this treatment for many disorders or problems with organs where they press all the way down to the organ and do their thing. Anyways hope that cleared up something's. hugs Kimmi

Kimmi, What dye test did you have done and what did it show that made them suspect adhesions as the back pain? Since they don't show on tests I am not clear on this but had alot of tests including dye done.

Helen, Pain management is an excellent place for any one suffer with chronic pain. Just have to make sure you go to a true pain management center. Many chiro's,homeopathic ect call them selves pain management. Pain management centers are primarily ran by anesthesiologists and doctors that specialize in treatments for pain relief. There are a variety of treatments that anesthesiologists can try some people get relief some do not. I am sorry that doctor did not remove those adhesions, you know that really ticks me off too. They should when they are in clean all adhesions that they see even small areas that are connected to anything eventually they will grow and attach to something and then you are twice as much pain. I suffer with nerve damage and nerve pain. I use neurotin for this, neurotin is an anti seizure type drug that they found out is excellent for nerve pain. And the dose of neurotin can go extremely high. Many doctors start at 300 and the drug can go up to 4800mgs I believe. I take 1600 mgs, it helps with my face alot. I have trigiminal neuralgia which is chronic head neck and facial pain. On days that aren't too bad the neurotin helps on really bad days no matter what I take it won't help. Vascular pain is the veins/vessels expanding and causing pain. Sometimes they bleed which is what they really watch out for.

I also suffer with excruciating back pain, they believe from the dye test they did that the adhesions are pressing on the spine and nerves there. The best doctor to see for this is a neurologist, that is the one I see for my nerve pain. He is also the one who prescribed the Neurotin you may want to ask him about it. Hugs hon sorry your having a rough time Kimmi

Hi to all, I hope that your week has been going well, and welcome to all the new people on the board.

What a week I have had!!, and thankyou to everyone for their kind words. I went to see my surgeon on Monday for my post op appointment, and I told him that I was still in pain and that my leg pain had returned and my right hand sided pain hadn't gone away at all. We were talking about the operation and I'm sure that in hospital he had told me that their were no adhesions on my right side, so I said if there are no adhesions on my right side what's causing the pain?, he said Oh there are adhesions there, but I didn't remove those ones, I didn't think they would be causing you too many problems... this is after I told him before the surgery to make sure and have a good look on the right hand side because I was getting alot of sharp pain their!!! So what a big waste of time...he's left half the adhesions in their. So at least now I know that I'm not going crazy !! LOL, but I'm disappointed to know that he didn't remove them all. With the other pain that I'm experiencing still, he thinks it may be nerve damage or vascular pain, and he wants me to see a back specialist to see if my back may be causing some of the problems, he doesn't think that the adhesions would have formed enough in 3 weeks to be causing the pain that I'm experiencing. So I'm back to square one yet again, he did mention that perhaps pain management might be the way to go, and if it's nerve damage then there's not much that can be done. Has anyone heard of Vascular pain? Just interested to know, he said to take my pulse when the pain is bad and see if it's in sync with the throbbing pain that I get. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest

Love Helen G
