Toni,

My partial obstructions have caused pain -- a sort of tenderness that was in one spot. I also would vomit, particularly in the evening when I had my biggest meal. If there were several partials, the pain would be in several places.

The surgeon could find the tenderness when he examined me. The CT-scans showed dilated bowel which were much more evident with the upper GI series.

I think the best test for partial obstruction is an upper GI series with small bowel follow through. You drink some barium and wait for it to make its way through the small bowel. This can take some time, often several hours, but it is not painful at all.

The complete obstruction was quite different: the pain was much worse, became crampy, and the vomiting was stupendous and uncontrollable.

Hope this helps,

Kate
