[] LOW-RESIDUE / LOW-FIBER DIETS: To reduce the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), physicians often recommend various special diets. But many people with IBD suffer from deficiencies of essential nutrients, and unnecessary dietary restrictions can contribute to malnutrition. Robin A. Henderson, Ph.D., R.D. (Staff Nutritionist, The Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Baltimore) evaluated a particular diet, the "low-residue/low-fiber diet," which often is recommended to IBD patients who suffer from diarrhea, or from narrowing or partial blockage of the small intestine. The purpose of the diet is to decrease the amount of undigestible fiber a person consumes. This reduces stool weight and frequency and prevents intestinal obstruction. The patient must avoid whole-grain breads and cereals, nuts and seeds, most raw, and some cooked fruits and vegetables.
