I mentioned the book, "Women and Doctors" in an earlier post; but could not give the author's name because I had loaned it to a friend. My friend returned this book today so now I am prepared to give some more information about this book as well as the author's name, John M. Smith, M.D. Dr. Smith is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist. In his book Dr. Smith makes the following comments:

"After twenty-four years of medical education and clinical gynecological experience, it is my experience, it is my opinion that males should not be gynecologists. The role properly belongs to women. Not only are they the only sex truly able to understand, empathize with, and appropriately relate to women in the already difficult doctor-patient relationship, but isn't it true that, given a choice, almost every woman would prefer to see a woman gynecologist? Women gynecologists might still act like other doctors in the areas that relate to income generation, but I believe they are incapable of inflicting the level of harm to other women that is now inflicted by males."

" Understanding how you can be led into unnecessary surgery by a doctor who thinks he is doing the right thing for you, and who you think is doing the right thing, is a key to grasping what is wrong with our system of health care and our typical doctor-patient relationship. The reasons for the frequency of unnecessary hysterectomies range from doctors' purely mercenary behavior to their honest but erroneous belief that they are doing the right thing for their patients."
