It is my understanding (after checking w/my gyn) that the cervix is removed with the uterus. The procedure to remove the ovaries & tubes is called a bi-lateral salipingo oopherectomy (I just murdered that term) aka BSO. You have to cut through nerves to remove the cervix. This doesn't mean that all sensation to the vagina is deadened, or that it will necessarily make sex worse (it would depend on the reason that you are having a hysterectomy) but it WILL make it different. For me, I was in such incredible pain before my surgery, that life was better as was sex. Again, the ladies that I correspond with over the internet through Sans Uteri can provide you with much more information was to positive results from a hysterectomy as well as the negative. I will say that more women have positive experiences when they keep their ovaries. Only you can decide whether a hysterectomy is right for you but I cannot stress strongly enough to you: educate yourself thoroughly before you consent to this surgery. Your doctor will not tell you much beyond telling you that they can fix any problems you might encounter with hormone therapy. If you're 56 when you have the surgery, you are much more likely to respond positively to hormore therapy (HRT) than if you're 34. I was 29 when I had the TAH & 32 when the BSO was done.
