Ginny--Amitriptilene (sp?) is the generic name for Elavil.....or vice
versa? I had a fit when the doc first suggested it because it is
officially an anti-depressant. I thought the doc was commenting on his
opinion of the root of my problem. I was then reassured to learn that
in small doses that it is used for some kinds of pain. For depression,
a therapeutic dose is 125 mg. For pelvic pain, my doc said that 50-75
mg is used. It took me a while to be able to get up to 50 mg....made me
very groogy at first...but is fine now...and with it...I can
sleeeeeeeeeeeeep. I take all 50 mg at about 7 PM and by 10 PM I can
fall right asleep. I am not crazy about being on meds...but think that
the meds do less wear and tear on my overall health than the constant
pounding stress that the pain delivers. By itself, the Elavil helps a
lot...but didn't get the best results until it was combined with the
other meds I talked about in my earlier post. As I understand it, the
meds that I am using are not addictive and can be taken over a long
period of time. I'll be curious to see what your doc says.
