Toni, I too had a lot of faith in my gyn.until I had had enough of him pushing me off on other Dr.s.In April of 98 I had a vaginal hysterectomy .The only thing remaining is my right ovary. After I had the hysterectomy I ended up with an infection,Caused by me having a bleeder ,which was due to the Dr. missing a stitch during surgery. This should have been my warning, but I trusted the Dr. and really liked him. He had a wonderful bedside manner and it seemed like he went that extra step to make you feel comfortable.I had to go back into surgery for this to be taken care of.After the infection was cleared up I was feeling pretty good for about 8 weeks then I started having a lot of pain in my lower left side.I went back to the Dr. and he said everything seemed to be fine, and mentioned that I might have adhesions. He then referred me to the senior partner of the practice whom I saw in the beginning of June. This Dr. told me that it was a possibility that I had adhesions but did not want to speculate and sent me for a ct scan and a barium enema both came back showing nothing. The Dr. asked me to give it a little time to see how the pain progressed.I was leaviving for vacation and was going to be away for 3 weeks. And when I was due to return this Dr. was going on an extended vacation and was going to be away until the beginning of September. My regular gyn would be available if I needed him.I called him when I returned from vacation and told him that the pain was getting really bad.He called me in a pain medication.I tried the pain med. for about 1 week and it did not help me so I called him back.Only to find out that my Dr. had left the practice I was with. This should have been my 2nd warning but I thought that I was under his care that I should follow him into the new practice he had gone with.I called him again and he told me that he wanted me to see a gasterial intestinal Dr. so I agreed .I saw this Dr. in August and he told me that he did not believe that my problem was gasterial intestinal related ,That by the sounds of things it sounded like I had adhesions.I called my gyn and told him what the G I Dr. said and my Dr. told me that he wanted me to see a gyn specialist so again I agreed to do this. I went to see this Dr. the beginning of September.I told him the history of the pain,he examined me and told me he did not feel that my problem was gyn related and recommended that I see a orthopedic Dr. .By this time I was so frustrated I didn't know what to do.I called my regular gyn and discussed with him what the specialist told me and I told him that I did not feel that I needed to see an orthopedic Dr. that the pain I was having was in my left side and lower abdomin not in my back.He questioned whiether the specialist had called me and I told him no. He told me that the specialist had called him and they had both agreed that a laporoscopy should be done to see what was going on.My Dr. told me that he asked the specialist if he would do the procedure and he said that he would.I asked my Dr. way he would not be doing the procedure and he told me that he felt that the other Dr. was better qualified to do this and that he did not want to over look anything and have me come back to him and tell him that I was still having pain.I waited about 4 days and had not heard from the specialist so I called his office. He was out of town and would be back in a few days.He returned my call a couple days later and told me that he had agreed to do the laporoscopy and that his scheduling seretary would be calling me to set up an appt. again I waited 4-5 days and nobody called me.so I called them .They told me that surgery was scheduled for the 18th of November.I felt that this was too lomg for me to have to wait, that I had been through enough.I called my regular gyn and told him that I did not want to wait that long that the pain was too bad for me to function in my daily activities. So he told me to call the specialist and see if the date could be moved up.I told him that I had already called him the day before and that he had not returned my call.He assured me that the Dr. would call me.And called me in a stronger pain medication.I waited until late afternoon the following day and the Dr. still had not returned my call so I called his office and left a message. The Dr. never did call me back One of his staff members did.she asked me what the problem was and I told her what I had been through and that i thought 9 weeks was too long for me to have to wait to have this procedure done. She told me that the problem was that the Dr. only does surgery once a week and he was totally booked. she would see what she could do.I was so frustrated and depressed .My husband recommended that I call my primary care physician and discuss everything with him to see what he could do.So I called the office and told the receptionist what was going on and she got me in to see the Dr. the following day.I went over with him all that had happened and he too thought right away that it sounded like I had adhesions.I asked what his opinion was about going to see an orthopedic Dr. and he told me that he did not feel it was nessarry. He told me that I had been on one big physicians merry-go-round and it was going to stop here.He told me he was going to call the specialist and stress to him that I needed to have this taking care of as soon as possible He called the specialist that day but again he was out of town and would return his call .The specialist called him back the next day and he agreed that I should have this done as soon as possible.Only it was only an agreement, Nothing changed. surgery was still scheduled for Nov.18th.A very dear friend of mine asked me if I would ever consider going back to the senior partner of the practice I was with in the beginning,At first I told her no way.I couldn't, I left there to follow my gyn into his new practice. But the more I thought about I wondered. What exactally has my regular gyn done for me? other than send me to Dr. after Dr.and frustrate the heck out of me.I called this Dr. on October 1st he was not in the office that day but I talk to a nurse and told her that I had been a patient in that office and that I had a consult with this Dr. in June and left a message for the Dr. to call me.He returned my call the next day and recalled seeing me and everything we had discussed.I told him all that had been going on and that everyone agreed that a laporoscopy should be done but could not be performed until the middle of nov.He told me that he would be willing to help me out as best he could. I told him that there may be a problem because when my regular gyn left his practice I followed him.He informed me that it was not a problem that all my records were still there and all I had to do was switch over on the insurance.I thanked him for everything and he told me that someone from his office would be calling me to set it up.within 1 hour someone called me and surgery was scheduled for Oct. 23rd.When surgery was over the Dr. went out to speak to my husband and told him that were a massive amount of adhesions all over the lower abdomin, there was a clump of adhesions on the left side and the bowel was adhered to the abdominal wall on both the left and right side.he did lyses of adhesions and cleaned off the abdominal wall.I went back for my post op appt. on Nov.18th I was feeling alot better.I'm not sure if you know anything about adhesions but within 8 weeks I started having pain on the left side again The Dr. thought that maybe I was still healing from the surgery and asked me to give it a little time . By January 21st I was having quite a bit of pain The Dr. said it was too soon to do another laporoscopy and suggested that we try steroid treatment I started the treatment on February 11th which was a series of 4 shots giving 1 every 2 weeks unfortunatly this did not work .So now he had decided to do another laporoscopy.I just had this done on April 29th and again the Dr. found quite a bit of adhesions on the left side .This time he used an adhesion barrier called interceed he does not gaurentee that he will not have to do another laporoscopy to lyse adhesions again but the barrier does cut down the chances.I thank my friend all the time for suggesting that I talk to this Dr. if it wasn't for him I don't know where I would be .At first I was not sure about putting my faith in him because my faith in Dr.s had been broken.I felt so betrayed that my regular gyn was not willing to help me out better than he did.We need to have faith in our Dr.s but we also have to know when enough is enough.
