Sue - With a colectomy - both sceneros are possible. They can make a colostomy or they can do what is called an IPAA which stands for Illium pouch anal anastomosis. This is where they connect the end of the small bowel (ilium) to the rectal end. There are several reasons why a colostomy may or may not be needed such the need for bowel rest or the bowel is too diseased.
