You have the same insurance as me, HMO Blue Cross/BLue Shield. They do not want to pay for out-of-network benefits. I had talked with Dr. Gerhart from Scranton and had all my records sent to him. My gyn even wrote a letter on my behalf stating that he thought it was in my best interest to have surgery with Dr. Gerhart. The insurance company still denied coverage. They say there are doctors in-network who should be able to perform the same care. The problem is they cannot tell me who those doctors are. My PCP doesn't know who to sent me to either. I have found other doctors here in Houston who specialize in adhesions but they are not on my insurance. And of course that would mean out-of-network coverage so the insurance will not approve that either. When I talked with Dr. Gerhart he said that I could expect to pay around $30,000. This includes the airfare, hospital, his cost, food, and hotel stay. But from what I have been told by some who have already gone to Germany, they paid about $12,000 for airfare, hospital, surgeon, food, and a flat for 10 days. Since they can use SprayGel over there and the cost is about half of what it would be in Scranton, then my plans are to go to Germany. It would surely be easier coming up with $12,000 than $30,000. But I am like you, for now, the pain management doctor will have to do until I get the money I need to go to Germany.
