.) Pathogenesis: How deposition of fibrin leads to adhesion formation....."Under the ischemic conditions present after surgical trauma, fibrinolytic activity is suppressed, which results in persistence of the fibrin bands. Once the fibrin bands are infiltrated with fibroblasts, they become organized to form what are clinically identified as adhesions."

.) Why do adhesions form?.....Scroll down to read: " Some of the causes of adhesion formation are: Trauma, Ischemia, Foreign Bodies, Hemorrhage, Raw Surfaces, Infection."

.) Adhesion Answers....." Endometriosis is one possible cause of pelvic adhesions. Surgery is another, but you don’t mention having prior surgery, so we’ll eliminate that one. Infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can cause adhesions. Some adhesions are even thought to be congenital, meaning you’re born with them."

But radiation therapy can cause moderate to severe adhesion formation, attaching organs to other organs, muscles, bones, connective tissues and their support structures. When this happens, organs can lose their ability to function normally, causing a variety of symptoms. When nerves are involved, pain results.

" Radiation therapy can cause adhesions to form at the sites of cancer treatment or surrounding tissues. Symptoms sometimes appear far from the site of the original trauma. Inflammation following trauma or radiation therapy may cause adhesions to spread to neighboring organs unless they are removed or diminished by a physician or therapist trained to treat them."

.) Adhesions....." Adhesions can cause major problems with fertility. Although adhesions can be removed at surgery, surgery can also cause adhesions. The more damage there is during surgery, the greater the chance that adhesions will occur."

.) Radiation Enteritis.....Scroll down to photo # 3 ... " This chronic radiation enteritis had caused a stenosis of the jejunum. Treatment of this injury may be difficult, surgery is often difficult because of severe intra-abdominal adhesions due to the radiation injury. The affected part of the bowel can be resected - if that is not possible, it can be bypassed."

.) Adhesions.....Scroll down to: Causes ... "Inflammation, surgery, or trauma can cause tissues to bond to other tissue or organs (much like the process of forming scar tissue). Sometimes, fibrous bands (adhesions) can be formed between the two surfaces. Abdominal surgery, congenital bands, or attacks of appendicitis or pelvic inflammatory disease can also cause intraperitoneal adhesions." http://www.iowaclinic.com/adam/ency/article/001493.shtml

.) Pelvic Adhesions....." Pelvic adhesions can arrive from silent infections (Chlamydia, overt infections, gonorrhea), or from endometriosis, appendicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or various pelvic operations."

.) Adhesion....." Adhesion is the growing together of body tissues that are normally separate. Adhesions (protective bands) form in some disorders, following injuries, or following surgery. The sticky healing fluid produced by the damaged internal tissue can solidify to form a band."

.) Starch, granulomas and adhesions......"much evidence has been accumulated to show that corn starch causes a range of post-operative problems, including adhesions, granulomas and starch granulomatous peritonitis."
