Dear Amanda,
I had a Dalkon Shield IUD inserted for contraception in 1970, when they
first were available. Around 1973 I started to episodes of terrible
pain (which now I realize was adhesions). When I tried to conceive in
1977, it was discovered that my fallopian tubes were not open and the
fibria (on the ends, the finger like things that are supposed to catch
the ovum were all adhesed together. I had reconstructive surgery that
was unsuccesful. We instead adopted two children, one from Korea and
one from Mexico. There was a class action lawsuit against the Dalkon
Shield around 1986, because many women became infertile because of it,
some conceived while using it and delievered children with birth
defects, and several women died. IUD's are still being inserted into
women but I don;t know why!!!
My suggestion to you if you already know you have adhesions is to avoid
ANY surgery because it could likely cause more adhesions and much bigger
problems than infertily.
