Dear Heather, Yes you can do damage if you strain too hard while trying. Give yourself 20 min. of gentle pushing, then try again later I know the urge can be hard to ignore but take plenty of water and whatever your doc advises for this situation. Ask about fiber, low residue diet, enema or laxitive. You can end up with terrible hemmeroids which make subsiquent BM's painful all the way to vascular damage from straining too hard.
