A new phase III trial of BCG is being launched at Stanford University, one of the ten research centers across the country. They are currently seeking patients to participate. Based on a small pilot study, BCG therapy appears to be effective at reducing the symptoms of IC. Of those treated with BCG, 60 percent responded well, compared with 27 percent in the placebo group. When researchers later treated the placebo group with BCG, 67 percent responded. "The effects of the treatment also appear to be long-lasting" offered Christopher Payne, MD. Dr. Payne appeared in the ICN Guest Lecture Series in 2001 discussing their earlier BCG research. Read that transcript.
