Are you 100% sure that it was spray-gel and not intergel? I'm pretty sure that unless this is a 2nd clinical trial that it would be illegal to use spray-gel in the US at this time. And if it were a clinical trial then they would not be allowed to tell you whether they used it or not. (Since the results of the trial would be compromised if the patients knew that they were "supposed to" feel better or worse and they would feel pressure to feel the way that they are supposed to.) Since you are obviously well-educated about adhesions, maybe you mentioned the spray-gel, and perhaps the doctor got confused and said "spray gel" when he meant to say "intergel." Or maybe he has been researching spray-gel because he is very "up" on adhesions, and that's what popped out of his mouth because he's been thinking about it a lot.

The intergel barrier seems to work for some people and not for others, so maybe even if it was intergel you will be one of the lucky ones and it will work for you!
