I had to do the same thing when I've had previous surgeries. I was told that your nails need to be visible because of something to do with checking your oxygen levels. I suppose that if they could see the nailbed through your acrylics, you wouldn't have to remove them. I'm sure they deal with this sort of thing a lot and have a better answer for you than me!
