Dawn, Where do you live? In Wisconsin and Michigan there is really no such thing as welfare anymore. In order to get help you must go through their programs to find work and then work a 40 hour a weeks job. You must spend a large amount of time looking for work. If you must be found disabled for Social Security or SSI to get welfare based on the fact that you are disabled. It is very tough here.....even if you are just looking for medical assistance. I just recently applied because I can't afford my medications anymore. My gross income is $780. By the time my insurance premium is taken out of my check I receive $666. My rent is half of that. When you throw in the telephone, cable, gas, car insurance and the cost of my going to see my doctor in Chicago I am way in the hole. But, I received a letter stating that I had to have a spenddown. I expected that. But my spenddown is $335 a month. I don't know how they expect me to live. This is where people fall through the cracks. I have finally found a company that will at least provide me with my MS Contin for free. I have the application filled out. I just need to get some paperwork together and get it approved. But my point is that it isn't easy to get help. Filing for social security disability is very important. There are two separate programs which people get confused. First there is Social Security Disability Insurance. That is what you have earned by working and paying into the system. You must be currently "insured" in order to be eligible. I don't know your age or your work history but given that you haven't worked in two years you may want to give them a disabled date back two years. That doesn't mean you will get paid back to that point. But, should there be a question as to whether you are "insured" that would possibly help. The second program is Supplemental Security Income or SSI. People get this confused with the first one. SSI is a welfare-type program. In order to receive SSI you not only must be found disabled, but your income and resources must meet certain guidelines. When and if you file for Social Security you need to fill out the paperwork as if it was your worst day. The reason for this is that you don't know from one day to the next what each day will be like. Assume every day is a bad one. Don't be afraid to tell them that you suffer from depression. It is only natural that someone that goes through the crap that we go through would suffer from depression. And if it will help your claim then so be it. Dawn, I used to work for Social Security. I have been through the claims process twice myself (was found disabled both times). I am NOT an expert, but I do feel that I can assist you should you want the help. Let me know. God Bless. Some day soon, there will be a way to take away the adhesions & they will never come back & you will be able to work again. You also have a child that needs things. As long as you dont plan to live the rest of your life on it, use it to make ends meet. 3 out of the 5 kids from my in laws are on welfare. They plan to live their lives on welfare. One of my sister in laws actually told me she made more on welfare than she did working, so why work! Those are the type of people I don't like to see using the system. His other sister has grandkids that live off welfare. My husband works hard for his money & it shouldnt go for people that are too lazy to work, it should go to help people that are in too much pain to work. I do not intend on hurting anyones feeling here.I am just trying to say that you have a legitamite claim to use welfare. robin
