Hi Helen, 4 of our members are trying this out for adhesions and say that it does help. I think it is similar to the one you posted. In Friendship Kath,

MSM-UK.NET - a nutritional aid to health in arthritis, joint pain, stiffness, inflammation, sports injuries, also allergies, diabetes, digestive, skin and other conditions.

Mineral magic

Imagine a mineral found in the body that can stop pain impulses before they reach the brain, keep joints flexible, encourage healthy skin, hair and nail growth and boost the immune system...

The marvel of MSM

MSM is the modern name for Brimstone, a natural form of organic sulphur found in all living organisms. It is a white odourless, slightly bitter tasting crystalline substance which contains 34% elemental sulphur. In the body, it occurs in the blood and certain organs.

Sulphur is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, and one of the primary substances used for detoxifiying the body of mercury following the removal of mercury amalgam fillings, but it has far more powerful uses. Most notably, sulphur is needed for the formation of connective tissue - concentration in arthritic cartilage has been shown to be one third of the level in normal cartilage. In addition, the amino acid cysteine has been noted to be diminished in arthritis patients.

Animal protein foods like eggs and unpasteurised milk contain good levels of sulphur. It is also found in grains and fresh, raw vegetables like red peppers, onion, garlic, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus and cabbage. But it is highly soluble, and amounts may evaporate through processing, cooking or steaming.

MSM has been formulated into a supplement and used in the USA with great success - and recently it was introduced into this country. It can be taken in tablet or powder form and doses are usually taken with lots of water every 12 hours. Levels should be increased gradually, as diarrhoea can occur, until the body becomes used to it. Vitamin C enhances the action of MSM. As with any vitamin, mineral or supplement, it should only be taken with the advice of a trained healthcare professional.

As well as its value as an organic sulphur compound - which aids the repair of damaged tissue - MSM is non-toxic and has been shown to have no side effects. It occurs naturally and abundantly in milk, raw meat, fish and fresh vegetables, but it is volatile and is easily lost during cooking, processing and refining.

MSM at a glance

As a painkiller: Experts believe that MSM stops pain impulses before they reach the brain, acting as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It also helps detoxify the body.

Creating super cells: Sulphur is responsible for the ionic exchange within the sodium-potassium pump in the cell and is needed to maintain cell membrane permeability. This ensures nutrients are delivered into the cell and toxins can be eliminated. If waste isn't eliminated, this can lead to asthma, ear, nose and throat infections, fatigue, hayfever, headaches and gastro-intestinal problems.

Promoting joint flexibility: Sulphur can help flexibility in joints, reduce stiffness, swelling and pain, improve circulation and break up calcium deposits or water bonds in the synovial fluid.

Forming keratin: Sulphur in MSM is thought to aid formation of keratin, which is an essential protein for hair and nail growth, and collagen, which keeps skin and joints healthy and flexible.

Boosting the immune system: Sulphur helps the body produce immunoglobulins - antibodies that boost immunity.

Preventing diabetes: Sulphur is a component of insulin, the hormone that regulates the uptake of glucose by cells for energy. Low sulphur levels can result in low insulin production or cell resistance to insulin, leading to diabetes.

Common ailments: MSM is also claimed to help arthritis, diabetes, allergies, healing of wounds, eye problems, cramps, stress and even snoring.
