Lesa, Some people don't even know they have done it, especially if it is a friend or someone you email. If they get the virus unknowingly and open the attachment it can get all the names from your address book and send it to everyone in your address book. It can attach itself to the email you send.

This is all in addition to destroying all the information on your computer causing your computer not to work or not work properly, depending on what they have managed to program it to do! Some viruses are worse than others. There are several very bad ones out right now so be extra careful, run virus scan daily, have it scan all email attachments and "update" your virus definition files (DAT files). If you don't update the DAT files you are open for the new viruses!!

If you are unsure of an email attachment save it to your hard-drive first then scan it for a virus and if it says it didn't find any viruses it should be safe to open it. Don't open them without first scanning them...it may be a friend but they may not know they have a virus!

"Hackers" write the program or whatever it is called for the virus they want to start and tell the program what to do to the person's computer who receives and opens the attachment. These are very intelligent people but they have nothing better to do with their time, just like people who make bombs etc. They use their intelligence to harm things and people. JEAN
