Kris,

Did you happen to read my story on the quilt? It sounds like we are virtually walking down the same road except you have had the ileostomies where I have only had the urostomy.

Due to the permanence of the urostomy I have an automatic weak spot in my abdominal wall....therefore my abdomen constantly herniates. In actuality I have no rectus muscle left and therefore no abdominal wall. Everything they have tried to prevent the hernias has failed. They have even taken the muscle tissue out of both of my legs to reinforce the abdominal wall...only for me to end up with more hernias less than six months later.

I am now scheduled to have skin expanders placed in my upper abdomen in late July. They will work over six weeks to tighten them and once in place they will do a second surgery to put them in the lower abdomen and do a new urinary diversion. Because the adhesions are now kinking off my ureters I have had multiple episodes of kidney shutdown. My doctors do not believe that I will survive this next surgery to place the expanders...I would think that the odds of my surviving two procedures is even less. But, I have been told that the kidney infections that I am now having one after the other are going to kill me. I have a very huge decision to make ahead of me. I have been leaning towards not having this surgery....but I just don't know. I want all of this to be over with.
