I also had no cartilage left between the bones where the ball rotates. Cartilage cushions between bones so you don't get friction and pain when it moves. I had bone scraping on bone which means you get sharp pains when you try to walk.
With a hip-replacement they dislocate your hip (not break, just take out of joint)..... they saw off the head (ball) then they dig out the inside of your thigh bone and hammer a long rod in. They remove the cup from your pelvis (cut or dig it out I guess) and hammer a metal or plastic cup in. SOUNDS YUMMY, HUH??
When you get it re-done or revised like I did last year they have to get the cup & rod back out and put a new one in. They couldn't get my rod out so they broke about 4" of my bone off to get it out. He never put the 4" bone back and just left it out.....allot of doctors will wire it together so it mends to your bone or the metal but for some reason he just left mine out completely!
I also have long screws in my pelvis this time to hold the cup and didn't before.
