One in 20 Americans will suffer this year with a serious, but treatable illness. The illness is depression ( throughout this site, "depression" refers to the DSM-IV diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder ). Unfortunately it is often missed or misdiagnosed -- especially in children and the elderly -- but once correctly diagnosed, the vast majority of patients respond well to treatment. Women are diagnosed with this illness nearly twice as often as men, but it can affect anyone, at any age, of any race, socioeconomic class, or ethnic background.

We're here to provide information about depression and how to treat it, as well as to provide resources that you and your patients can use to help plan and effect recovery.
