I assume by lower GI, you mean a barium enema. Barium is very constipating. Whenever I've had one, the radiologists tell me to drink lots of water and to take a mild laxative. That might help the pain.

I usually have pretty severe pain after colonoscopy which resolves itself in a day or two.

Adhesions can narrow the large intestine and make it difficult for the scope to go through. Barium, being liquid, is a bit more giving, but it also can produce gas and pain.
