Cindy,

Adhesions can develop from endometriosis which is the growth of uterine lining tissue outside of the uterus. As you know, each month the lining of the uterus thickens in preparation of a possible pregnancy. If it isn't needed, it becomes the menstrual flow.

In some women similar tissue exists outside of the uterus. It responds to hormones just like the uterine lining, grows, causes pain, and sometimes causes adhesions to form.

So you can have adhesions without having had surgery. Many women on this list do.

In terms of why the pain is only at night -- I think you've found the answer. Lying down creates pressure you don't have sitting or standing. I often have to get up out of bed and sleep in the recliner. It hurts to lie flat and it hurts more when I turn on my side.

I have my father's recliner with an electric motor that raises and lowers it and makes it easier to get up and down with my sore tummy.
