My wife has been on Oxycontin for three years. Including major surgery. Cold turkey cessation is not recommended and can be serious if not miserable or life threatening. But there are other drugs that can be given to substitute for the oxycontin before or after surgery and then you can go back on the oxycontin later. I would ask another good anesthesiologist those same questions.

Like I said, we have been there, done that, as the mountain dew commercial goes.

Oxycontin is the best one for my wife.

Frank--Can you call anesthesiology dept at the hospital where you would have your surgery and direct that question to an anesthesiologist? Those ppl know their meds! I've decided if I find that I need pain management again (now off ALL pains meds after my surgery two weeks ago...wheeeeeeeeee)....that I will go to a pain clinic that is staffed by anesthesiologist. Been to a physiatrist...and appreciate that angle...but would be curious about how an pain specialist who is an anesthesiologist would differ in approach.
