The appendix is a long, tubular organ of uncertain function that is
located in the right, lower quadrant of the abdomen (usually about 3 fingers
below and to the far right of the belly button). It can become inflammed,
called appendicitis, or it can stick to surrounding organs and cause pain. It can
also become involved with cancers, endometriosis, and other condition. Treatment
is appendectomy through either a small cut, or by laparoscopy. Here, an instrument is
grasping the fatty tissue adjacent to the appendix, so that we can see what a normal appendix
looks like.
