Surgeons, who are adhesion specialists

I do not claim to be an expert on the following subjects. I am simply sharing information; which I have learned as the result of the research, which I have done since Fall 1997.

[]]] SURGEONS WHO ARE ADHESION SPECIALISTS:

1.) have logged thousands of hours in doing laparoscopic procedures.

2.) perform many of these procedures day after day -- in comparison to other surgeons.

3.) use microsurgical techniques.

4.) have developed special techiques, which they continually strive to improve.

5.) must have the virtue of PATIENCE -- because surgeries of this kind can take many hours to complete!!

6.) are very risky surgeries for the surgeon to perform -- and may result in an injury for the patient, such as a perforated bowel.

I had an appointment with a colon-rectal surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in January 1998. He told me that he WOULD NOT do an adhesiolysis procedure for me -- unless I presented to the Emergency Room with a bowel obstruction. He did not advise surgery!!!!

This surgeon's reply does NOT necessarily mean that surgeons DO NOT believe that adhesions DO NOT cause pain. It means that surgeons have learned -- through many failed attempts at adhesiolysis procedures -- that an adhesiolysis procedure is not the answer.

Considering the risks involved for their patients, surgeons DO NOT encourage surgery for adhesions. At the present time there are NO adhesion barriers, which have been proven to prevent adhesions. Adhesions are the way our body heals itself. It is a very natural process...our bodies are in control of the healing that takes place!
