[] Ask the Mayo Dietitian - Low Residue Diet: " I've been told to eat a "low-residue" diet. I have had a lot of stomach pain after eating ever since I had surgery on my intestine. My doctor tells me that I have 'adhesions.' What are adhesions? What is a low-residue diet? What can I eat? ".....Carol / CT

2.) [] LOW-RESIDUE / LOW-FIBER DIETS: To reduce the symptoms of
inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), physicians often recommend various
special diets. But many people with IBD suffer from deficiencies of
essential nutrients, and unnecessary dietary restrictions can contribute
to malnutrition. Robin A. Henderson, Ph.D., R.D. (Staff Nutritionist,
The Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Baltimore) evaluated a particular
diet, the "low-residue/low-fiber diet," which often is recommended to
IBD patients who suffer from diarrhea, or from narrowing or partial
blockage of the small intestine. The purpose of the diet is to decrease
the amount of undigestible fiber a person consumes. This reduces stool
weight and frequency and prevents intestinal obstruction. The patient
must avoid whole-grain breads and cereals, nuts and seeds, most raw, and
some cooked fruits and vegetables.

4.) [] Low Fiber Low Residue Diet:

Purpose

Dietary fiber is the undigestible part of plants that maintains the structure of the plant. Dietary fiber includes cellulose, hemicellulose, polysaccharides, pectins, gums, mucilages, and lignins. Although they are chemically unrelated, they all resist digestion by the human body. It is this resistance that makes these fibers important in both the normal functioning and in disorders of the large intestine or colon. In certain medical conditions, it is important to restrict fiber. These include acute or subacute diverticulitis, and the acute phases of certain inflammatory conditions of the bowel -- ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. After some types of intestinal surgery, a low fiber, low residue diet may be used as a transition to a regular diet. A low fiber diet is also used for a period of time after a colostomy or ileostomy is performed.

5.) [] Low-Fiber / Low-Residue Diet:

What You Should Know: The fiber in fruits, vegetables, and grains is not absorbed by the body. Instead, it adds bulk to bowel movements. When smaller, softer bowel movements are important, doctors therefore recommend a low fiber / low residue diet. You may need this type of diet if you have diarrhea, cramping, bowel problems, or difficulty digesting certain foods. A low-residue diet is also often recommended after surgery.

What You Should Do: Choose only foods on the approved lists below. Be especially careful to avoid the items on the "Do not eat" lists.

7.) [] Low residue diet: A low residue diet is needed to reduce both the number and size of stools. To achieve this some foods must be avoided.

2.) Foods allowed each day

8.) [] Restricted-fiber or Low-residue Diet

Restricted-fiber or Low-residue Diet. This diet is designed to prevent the blockage of the intestines and to reduce the frequency and volume of feces. It is indicated for persons with inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, intermittent or partial obstruction, as a postoperative diet, or following radiation to the gastrointestinal tract. The restricted fiber diet excludes most raw fruits and vegetables, as well as whole-grain breads and cereals, seeds, and nuts. It does not restrict meat or dairy products. On a low-residue diet, prune juice is eliminated and milk and milk products are restricted to two cups daily as these items increase colonic residue.

9.) [] Low Fiber, Low Residue DIet: The low fiber, low residue diet provides food that will result in a reduced amount of fecal material in the lower bowel, and produce only a moderate amount of intestinal residue. This diet is designed for the patient receiving radiation therapy on or near the intestines or for the patient with partial bowel obstruction.
