Surgery of any kind is perhaps the most frequent cause of adhesions; because any amount of blood left in the body cavity - at the conclusion of a surgical procedure - will cause adhesions! As a result adhesions will cause abdominal/pelvic organs, which are meant to move freely, to stick to one another. When internal organs are prevented from moving freely, as a result of adhesions, pain is the result.
Some other causes of adhesions are: endometriosis, an ectopic pregnancy, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), ruptured cysts, ruptured appendix...just to name a few.
