Deborah A. Metzger, PhD, MD, FACOG is a reproductive endocrinologist devoted to the treatment of women with challenging medical problems. After graduating from college (SUNY @ Buffalo, 1973), she obtained a PhD in molecular endocrinology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas (1979). She attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston (1982) and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1986) and a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (1988) at Duke University in North Carolina. After 6 years on the faculty of the University of Connecticut Health Center (where she was promoted to associate professor) she went into private practice in Hartford, CT specializing in chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, infertility and advanced laparoscopic surgery. In 1998, Dr Metzger joined Dr Kresch, resulting in the creation of Helena Women's Health.

She is recognized as one of the leading authorities in the treatment of endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain. She has lectured extensively throughout the world, published widely in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and is one of the editors of Chronic Pelvic Pain: An Integrated Approach, the first book on the subject. Her goals are to continue to work closely with patients, to develop a national network of chronic pelvic pain centers that will provide women with state-of -the-art care, promote research into new treatment, and educate future physicians.

She lives outside of San Francisco with her husband, son and daughter. Her passions include gardening, tennis, skiing, movies, travel, photography and time for reflection.

Dr. Metzger is supported by a specialized staff of nurse practitioners trained in the management of complex medical problems:

Linda Howard-Smith, NP Joyce Fancher, NP Kirsten Conrad, NP

Dr Kathy Levdar is a psychologist on our staff who is available to teach pain management, meditation and help resolve other issues.
